Training Offered for Therapists on Clinical Issues & Sexual Orientation – Nov. 30 & Dec. 1

The LGBT Mental Health Task Force in Michigan, in conjunction with Affirmations, is offering this intensive two-day training on Nov. 30th and Dec. 1st for therapists who see lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients.  The training covers basic population demographics, terms and culturally-affirming language use, sub-cultural identity intersections, legal issues, sexual attraction and social development process, coming out, clinical concerns, and professional and ethical considerations.

Trainers include a team of Southeastern Michigan’s experts in this field:  Dr. Fran Brown, Director of Clinical Training at Michigan School of Professional Psychology; Jay Kaplan, Director of the LGBT Project at the ACLU of Michigan; Dr. Joe Kort, Owner, Joe Kort & Associates; Dr. Judith Kovach, Director of the Michigan Project for Informed Public Policy; Dr. Amorie Robinson (aka “Kofi Adoma”), Published expert in masculine-identified African American lesbians; Dr. Don Spivak, child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and psychoanalyst; Dr. Maxine Thome, Executive Director, NASW-MI. The training is sponsored by:  Oakland Integrated Healthcare Network, Oakland University, NASW-MI, Birmingham Maple Clinic; Lawrence Wentworth & Associates, Michigan Project for Informed Public Policy; Michigan School of Professional Psychology; Bloomfield Counseling, PC; CORE Learning, Jane E. Kelly, PhD; and Sideline Counseling.
